1976 Marion Giants Basketball Team

1976 Marion Giants Basketball TeamWhen the 1975-76 Marion Giants started practicing in early October, even the most loyal Marion fans were unsure about the upcoming season. Four, of the starting five, from the previous year had graduated leaving Dave Colescott as the lone returning starter from the 1975 Championship squad. Joe Neal and Tuffy Jackson, who saw the most varsity action, along with six other letter winners, including Jess Alumbaugh, Canton Hayes, Jeff Bragg, Matt Dubuque, Ray Myers, and James Freshwater were ready for action. What unfolded with this group of players was amazing, as Bill Green began his sixth season with the Giants. Marion started strong, winning eight of their first nine games, including the Holiday Tournament Championship, and finished the season 15-5. As they entered the State Tournament play they won eight games in a row, including last second semi state wins over Anderson Highland and FW North, and a last second win over Jeffersonville in the afternoon game at state. The season ended with a win over Rushville 82-76 in the final game of the State Tournament. The Giants became the first back to back state champions since Indianapolis Attacks in 55 and 56. The Marion fans knew the strong efforts of the entire team, led by senior David Colescott, and Coach Bill Green, went beyond all expectations to bring the State Title back to Marion. Colescott's recognitions brought additional honor to Marion when he was named the Trester winner and Mr. Basketball, 1976
